LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. (WHP) — A 6-year-old girl was hospitalized after overdosing on marijuana edibles that she found in her backyard according to Lancaster Township police.
Officials say that the child found a package of edibles on the ground, opening them and eating several without her parents knowing.
Later that evening, her parents say they noticed she was lethargic and withdrawn. They told police they assumed she was just tired, but the next morning she had shallow breathing and a series of seizures.
Her parents took her to a local hospital, from which she was transferred to Hershey Medical Center Children's Hospital where medical personnel determined she had overdosed on marijuana edibles.
After a multi-day hospital stay, the victim recovered and police say she is now in good health.
An investigation determined that the overdose was accidental and the parents are not at fault. Police and a Children and Youth Agency social worker searched the backyard where the child found and consumed the gummies. They found the remnants of the marijuana edibles package.
Police say that the package is consistent with forms of edible marijuana that are illegal in Pennsylvania. Officials suspect that an unknown person dropped the package while using a pathway between a wooded area behind the backyard.
Lancaster Township Police ask parents and guardians to speak with their children about the dangers of consuming "what may appear to be innocent candy packages on the ground." For more information, visit Poison Control's website.
