MANSFIELD — A second cannabis dispensary may be open in Mansfield in the next several weeks.
Cincinnati-based King City Gardens has announced plans to open a dispensary at 1099 W. Fourth St. in a building that had been purchased and remodeled by a different cannabis company earlier this year.
That company, Backroad Wellness, never successfully obtained the needed state license for its Mansfield operation.
“King City Gardens (The Garden) has taken over the space and plans to open after some minor cosmetic and branding changes,” said Brandon Cogozzo, digital specialist for King City Gardens.
According to Cogozzo, The Garden Mansfield will feature “a modern, welcoming design with a convenient drive-thru, making it easily accessible for patients and customers across north central Ohio.”
He said the company was targeting an opening in late November or early December.
King City Gardens is a cultivator-owned dispensary, according to Cogozzo.
Customers can expect to see a wide variety of products that include flower, prerolls, edibles, vapes, tinctures, patches and concentrates.
In October, King City Gardens opened The Garden Dispensary, its flagship retail location in Cincinnati’s historic Camp Washington neighborhood, two miles from downtown.
According to the company, that opening marked “the beginning of King City Gardens’ ambitious expansion.”
“With five additional licenses secured across Ohio, construction is already underway on its Sycamore Township location, with more sites to follow in the coming year,” the company said.
The Ohio Dept. of Commerce Division of Cannabis Control website did not show a license yet in Richland County for King City Gardens.
Cogozzo said Friday the company expects to have a provisional license from the state for Mansfield within the next week. It will then work to obtain a certificate of operation from the DCC, timing for which would impact the actual opening date.
The Richland County Auditor’s Office website does not show a recent sale of the property. Cogozzo said the company is leasing the property for now.
The first cannabis dispensary in Mansfield opened in April when Beyond Hello opened for business at 1515 Lexington Ave.
Mansfield lawmakers voted last year to allow up to three recreational and/or medical marijuana dispensaries within the city.
Council voted 5-3 to allow up to three dispensaries in the city, providing those businesses meet state requirements and also comply with existing city zoning codes for business districts.
Adrian Ackerman, director of the city’s permitting and developing department, said Friday she signed a form Oct. 3 indicating the business was properly zoned for the planned retail operation.
The building was previously renovated for the cannabis dispensary operation. That means the city doesn’t have any more requirements for the operation, Ackerman said.
