DETROIT, MI (WTVB) – Six elementary school students from Thomas Edison Elementary School in Detroit were hospitalized on Tuesda, after consuming suspected marijuana-infused gummies.
School officials confirmed the incident occurred during the school day, with some reports indicating students showed serious symptoms, and at least one student was reportedly administered Narcan by a staff member. While the specific ages of all children were not initially detailed, reports from WWJ Newsradio 950 indicated they were between 11 and 12 years old. All six students are expected to be okay.
The Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) is using the incident to highlight what Superintendent Nikolai Vitti described as an ongoing and increasing challenge with youth consumption of edibles.
District officials are urging families to strictly secure marijuana products at home and to speak with their children about only eating food or candy they provide themselves. An investigation is currently underway to determine how the students obtained the gummies and how they were brought onto the school campus.
