DETROIT (WWJ) — School officials say all kids involved ate doing OK after a scare involving marijuana edibles that made its way into a Detroit classroom.
Six students at Edison Elementary School were taken to a hospital on Tuesday after eating marijuana-infused gummies, according to a spokesperson for the Detroit Public Schools Community District.

WWJ's Pat Vitale reported that, as of Wednesday morning, it was not yet known where the children — all 11 and 12 years old — got ahold of the gummies. That's still under investigation.

With this incident in mind, the school system is reminding parents that — as these marijuana products can easily be confused with fruit snacks and other candies — it's important to keep them locked up and away from children.

The following statement was provided by the Detroit Public Schools:

"Yesterday six students at Edison were transported to the hospital after consuming what appears to be edibles with marijuana. The students are okay. We continue to remind all families to secure their edibles and to have conversations with their children about not consuming any food or candy they do not purchase themselves or obtain from home. The consumption of edibles by youth has been an ongoing and increasing challenge since legalization and one that Superintendent Vitti has called for greater restriction of sales statewide and especially in the City, along with an increase in ad campaigns in the City explaining the health risk associated with youth consumption of marijuana edibles."

This comes as marijuana is legal to sell (with a license) use, and posessed in the Metro Detroit area, and quite common in edible form.

Michigan first legalized medical marijuana in November 2008 through the passage of Proposal 1, making it the first state in the Midwest to do so. A decade later, in November 2018, voters approved another proposal to legalize recreational use for adults 21 and older, with the first licensed retail sales beginning in December 2019.

As of early this year, the number of dispensaries in Detroit and the surrounding suburbs is estimated to be around 250 to 300 active locations.
