Ortonville — During the regular meeting on Monday night, the Ortonville village council voted 6-1 to approve a license application for a marijuana dispensary on M-15. Village President Ken Quisenberry voted no.
“Pursuant to the voter approved ballot initiative allowing such businesses, previously there were two licenses issued with conditions,” said Village Manager Matt Ryan. “Those conditions over two years of work were not met. This led to the opening of the application window this past fall.”
According to the current ordinance that was approved by voters in 2022, the village allows two marijuana retail establishments. The village planning commission has rewritten the ordinance to bring the number down to one, and to regulate distance from a major intersection to avoid traffic incidents. The revised ordinance has not yet been adopted, but the licensee expressed a desire to work with the village to adhere to any changes the revised ordinance would have.
“The licensee is Calyxi Green Leafs LLC,” said Ryan. “They are a local company based in Auburn Hills with a number of businesses including restaurants, construction contracting, as well as other marijuana establishments located around the state.”
The building in the application is located at 258 S. Ortonville Road, which was formerly the Ortonville Montessori.
“The plan was viewed and approved through building officials and the planning commission and was presented Monday night for approval by the council,” said Ryan. “The building at 258 S. Ortonville will likely become under construction soon for modifications they are making to create their retail space. Calyxi Green Leafs LLC has proven itself already dedicating commitments to becoming a good partner in Ortonville in our other businesses and looking for ways to possibly contribute to our community.”
