An 18-year-old Alexandria man goes to court this month for allegedly shooting and robbing a man in Alexandria West back in August.
John Montgomery is being held without bond after his Dec. 12 arrest, more than four months after the Aug. 19 shooting and robbery in an apartment parking lot at the 3200 block of S. 28th Street.
The Alexandria Police Department found evidence that Montgomery arranged to meet with the victim, a marijuana delivery driver in D.C., and then shot and robbed him, according to a recently released search warrant affidavit.
Montgomery, who lives a block away from where the incident occurred, goes to court on Jan. 8 (Thursday), and has been charged with robbery with serious bodily injury, a Class 2 felony punishable by a minimum of 20 years in prison and a $100,000 fine.
Witnesses who observed the shooting from a nearby balcony told ALXnow that they saw two men in dark clothing run from the scene after hearing gunshots. The victim, described as a man in his mid-20s, exited his dark-colored Honda sedan after being shot in the abdomen and asked bystanders to call 911.
The victim was conscious when transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital by emergency medical services, and several residents helped apply pressure to his wounds while waiting for paramedics to arrive, according to witnesses.
The victim’s girlfriend told police that her boyfriend works for a marijuana delivery business in D.C., and that drivers with the company “occasionally deliver marijuana outside of D.C. to both Maryland and Virginia,” according to the affidavit. The company’s website advertises itself as “The Best Recreational Cannabis Delivery For Washington D.C., Virginia & Maryland.”
A witness told police that a suspect fitting Montgomery’s description was seen fleeing the scene with a Glock-style handgun with an extended magazine. Inside the vehicle, police found a spent .40 caliber shell casing and a bullet lodged in the driver’s seat. Montgomery was identified after officers found he fit the suspect description in an unrelated commercial robbery.
Alexandria police established a perimeter near Hampton Drive and Beauregard Street and worked with the Arlington County Police Department, since the incident occurred near the jurisdictional border. Arlington’s K-9 unit attempted to track the suspects. Police also reviewed security camera footage from nearby buildings and asked residents to avoid the area during the search, according to APD dispatches.
Police searched the victim’s phone and Montgomery’s phone and found “conversations showing Mr. Montgomery was attempting to have marijuana delivered via online delivery service that afternoon,” according to the affidavit.
Police also recovered a .40 caliber firearm with an extended magazine in Montgomery’s bedroom closet. Police conducted a test fire on the gun found, and “a potential association was found between the firearm recovered from Mr. Montgomery’s bedroom and the spent shell casing found in (the victim’s) vehicle.”
Montgomery will make an appearance in General District Court tomorrow (Thursday).
