Broome County Sheriff’s Office to Crack Down on Illegal Marijuana Shops
During its final session of 2025, the Broome County Legislature passed a law allowing the Broome County Sheriff’s office to begin cracking down on shops selling marijuana illegally.
In collaboration with New York State’s Office of Cannabis Management, the Sheriff’s office will now conduct inspections on unlicensed shops suspected of selling marijuana.
“at the end day, it’s all about public safety. If you’re going to consume it, make sure it’s consumed from a safe source.” says Captain Ben Harting of the Sheriff’s office. Harting says that residents should always check to make sure the marijuana they purchase is from a safe and legal dispensary.
“This isn’t like the 60s and 70s where there’s really one strain of marijuana. There’s hundreds of strains out there and readily available. Other narcotics people can mix in there. We just want people to have it come from a safe source and licensed in the proper manner.”
