WESTFIELD — The Stokes County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigation Division (SID) has concluded an investigation resulting in the discovery of a marijuana grow operation and a psilocybin mushroom cultivation site at a residence located at 1259 Horseshoe Road after a tip.
SID detectives initiated the investigation after receiving information alleging that marijuana was being cultivated at the property. To verify the complaint, detectives requested aerial assistance from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) Aviation Unit. During the flyover, NCSHP personnel observed marijuana plants growing on the premises, confirming the suspected criminal activity.
Following this determination, SID detectives executed a search warrant at the residence. Inside the home, investigators discovered an active psilocybin mushroom grow operation in addition to the marijuana found on the property.
In total, detectives seized approximately 17 pounds of marijuana and 1.24 pounds of psilocybin mushrooms, with an estimated combined street value of $25,000.
Sandra Kay Shelton, 58, was arrested on Sept. 2 and placed under a secured bond of $75,000. She is scheduled to appear in Stokes County District Court on Oct. 21.
Her charges include manufacturing schedule I controlled substance, trafficking in marijuana, multiple possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver, maintaining a dwelling for controlled substances, and possession of paraphernalia.
The Stokes County Sheriff’s Office extends its appreciation to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), and the Surry County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division for their assistance and cooperation throughout this investigation.
