Alliance to demolish blighted structures with cannabis tax revenue – cantonrep.com

ALLIANCE ‒ The city has received its first check from cannabis sales tax revenue, and the funds will pay for demolition projects.
City Auditor Kevin Knowles said the first check was for $39,862.88. Additional checks will come in monthly.
The city has one recreational cannabis dispensary, Consume Cannabis, which opened in 2024 on West State Street. The state has begun to disburse 36% of the total sales tax revenue from recreational cannabis to host communities like Alliance.
Knowles received approval Jan. 20 from City Council to establish a new special fund, the Host Community Fund (Fund 224), to account for all revenues and expenditures from cannabis tax revenue.
Knowles said the revenue would be intended for the city’s demolition program on residential and commercial structures. However, he told City Council it could change the purpose and use of those funds in the future.
