WACO, Texas (KWTX) — A father and son from Hutto were arrested Wednesday after a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper found nearly 80 pounds of marijuana in their vehicle during a traffic stop on Interstate 35, authorities confirmed.
Oscar Dagoberto Roldan, 55, and his son Noah Dagoberto Roldan, 19, were pulled over around 3:59 p.m. near mile post 348 on southbound I-35 for following too closely behind another vehicle, according to an arrest affidavit.
The trooper observed the white Toyota traveling around 70 mph with only half a second of following distance between vehicles.
During the traffic stop, the driver was slow to stop after the trooper activated emergency lights, leading to suspicion of criminal behavior, according to the affidavit. Both occupants appeared nervous during the roadside interview.
Oscar Roldan told the trooper he had a pistol in the driver’s side door pocket and presented a license to carry permit. He said he and his son had traveled from their Hutto home the previous day to Tulsa, Oklahoma for a “road trip” to visit filming locations for the show “Tulsa King,” according to the affidavit.
According to authorities, the trooper noticed the smell of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle and saw a large duffle bag in the rear seat in plain view. Law enforcement databases showed the pair had been engaged in questionable travel often associated with illegal smuggling activities, police reports confirmed.
A DPS K9 unit was called to the scene and gave a positive alert for narcotics in the vehicle. The subsequent search revealed two large duffle bags filled with marijuana – one in the rear seat and another in the trunk area.
The marijuana weighed approximately 79.2 pounds total and was packaged in individual clear plastic bags marked “THC = 31.57%,” which exceeds Texas’s legal tolerance of 0.3%, according to the affidavit. Police said the packaging was consistent with bulk distribution methods seen in other marijuana seizures.
Authorities also found a loaded Jericho 941 pistol in the driver’s door pocket and a GPS tracking device in the glove box, which police said is commonly used in drug smuggling operations.
Oscar Roldan was arrested on charges of delivery of marijuana over 50 pounds, a first-degree felony, and unlawful carrying of a weapon, a Class A misdemeanor. Noah Roldan was also arrested on the first-degree felony. Both bonds totaled to $54,000.
