Florida lawmakers are working to ban smoking, vaping, and recreational marijuana use in public places like sidewalks, beaches, and parks, while efforts to legalize recreational marijuana face challenges due to alleged fraudulent petition signatures.
Many participants at a shuffleboard tournament in the Lake Arrowhead neighborhood of North Fort Myers expressed support for the proposed ban on public smoking. Bob Foss, a participant, said, “Clearly, it’s a sport. And I don’t know how many sports go along with the participants smoking marijuana while they’re playing the sport.”
George Truax from Poinsettia Park shared his views on public smoking, saying, “Yeah. I just do not want them to smoke in public for sure, just because I get to smell it.”
Meanwhile, recreational marijuana was expected to be on the ballot in November, but the state has arrested petition gatherers, claiming many signatures were fraudulent. Anna Eskamani, a Democratic representative from District 42, said, “It’s shocking and frustrating. And another example of how they do not want everyday people to actually have their voices heard in a democratic process.”
Smart and Safe Florida, the group working to get it on the ballot, needs 880,000 signatures by February 1 to get recreational marijuana on the ballot, but only 700,000 have been verified so far. George Truax expressed uncertainty, saying, “Really, I’m on the fence on that.”
