SISKIYOU COUNTY, Calif. – Deputies from the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office have arrested Shel Saunders, 55, of Fort Bragg, California. Saunders was found transporting 1,363 pounds of illegally cultivated marijuana from the Mount Shasta Vista area.
Saunders was driving a sprinter van with 74 bags of marijuana and $253,870 in cash when stopped for a traffic violation. A search of the vehicle revealed no paperwork indicating the marijuana was legally grown or certified for sale.
Authorities also discovered a .40 caliber Smith & Wesson handgun in the engine compartment. Saunders was arrested for transporting and possessing marijuana for sale and booked into the Siskiyou County jail.
The Sheriff’s Office warns that illegally grown marijuana in Siskiyou County may use toxic, banned pesticides, posing health risks. The public is urged to verify their marijuana products through the DCC Product Safety Portal to ensure they are legally sourced.
