Two former Prison Officers from Berbice were remanded to jail on Tuesday after they appeared in Court at Blairmont to face drug trafficking charges.
The two women, 33-year-old Shamay Bryan and 32-year-old Sarafina Cheddy of Smithfield, New Amsterdam, made their appearance before Magistrate Michelle Matthias.
In Court, they faced the charge of trafficking just over 345 pounds of marijuana. Both women pleaded not guilty to the charge and were remanded to jail until the 26th March, 2026 as the Prosecutor objected to bail, noting the large quantity of marijuana found.
Bryan and Cheddy, who both lost their jobs with the Guyana Prison Service over various incidents, were arrested early Saturday morning during a Police operation on the West Coast of Berbice.
The Police said during that operation, a car with the two women was stopped, and several bags packed with marijuana were found in the back seat and trunk.
Both women were immediately arrested and the marijuana was seized.
