The Georgia Access to Medical Cannabis Commission is proposing amended and new rules, most notably to allow for home delivery.
During Thursday’s commission meeting, executive director Andrew Turnage explained how home delivery would work for the companies currently licensed to produce medical cannabis in Georgia and the more than 45,000 patients currently registered.
“That dispensing will occur through either the United States Postal Service or through a private carrier, and it can only go directly to the registered patient at the patient’s address that’s on their card,” he said.
While 30 states already allow delivery, the commission believes the federal rescheduling of marijuana addresses concerns about product transportation.
The commission is also proposing rules to allow medical cannabis to be sent to patients in long-term care facilities.
“They can get a card with the Department of Public Health and make the purchase on behalf of the patient,” Turnage explained in Thursday’s meeting. “This creates a much more secure transaction for that healthcare facility to be able to make a purchase at our dispensaries and have that shipped and delivered securely to those facilities without presenting a risk for diversion, without presenting a risk for. Frankly, theft, robbery, an attack in the parking lot, a lot of the security and safety concerns that are our responsibility to try to look out for.”
A public hearing on the proposed changes will be held Sept. 16.
The recently renamed Medical Cannabis Patient Registry has seen a recent jump in enrollment from 34,042 on July 1 to 45,356 on Aug. 5.
The crossing of the 45,000-level means the state’s six production licensees could each open an additional dispensary. Right now, there are 18 dispensaries across the state.
The state’s medical cannabis program has also expanded following the July 1 implementation of the “Putting Georgia’s Patients First Act“.
It most notably expands the eligible conditions for the program.
