Following years of attempts, lawmakers in Virginia are close to creating a legal marketplace to buy and sell recreational cannabis. Supporters say the law is needed more than ever, given how pervasive the illicit market has become. Tobacco shops have sprung up across the region, and many illegally sell cannabis.
“The good news is we’ve got a better bill,” Del. Paul Krizek, D-Fairfax, who sponsored a version of the legislation, told lawmakers last week. “The bad news is the black market has gotten more entrenched.”
Marijuana plants grew in 2020 inside the propagation room at Richmond’s Green Leaf Medical, a medical marijuana dispensary selling a variety of cannabis products.
