TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Two teenagers were arrested Friday night after Terre Haute police say they were armed when they were caught smoking marijuana near an elementary school.
According to a release from the Terre Haute Police Department, around 9 p.m. Feb. 13, officers were patrolling the area near Farrington Grove Elementary School, located at 1826 S. 6th St., when they smelled marijuana smoke nearby.
The smell was reportedly coming from a fenced portion of the school property.
When officers went to investigate, they found two 19-year-old males allegedly in possession of handguns.

Police say both teens were arrested on preliminary felony charges of possession of a firearm on school property. They were booked at the Vigo County Jail and are being held without bond, according to jail records.
“Our schools are important community assets meant for education, recreation, and positive activities,” Terre Haute police said in the press release. “We encourage parents and community members to speak with young people about making responsible choices and using school property in a safe and appropriate manner.”
