KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C. — A hemp business is at the center of a drug trafficking investigation after Kings Mountain Police executed a search warrant on the property last week, resulting in the seizure of processed marijuana and the arrest of one man.
Vice and criminal investigators served the warrant Feb. 19 at Ole Skool Hemp, located along South Battleground Ave., according to a department news release. The investigation began after officers received information about suspicious activity consistent with an illegal marijuana cultivation operation inside the business. Additional investigation and surveillance led officers to establish probable cause and obtain the warrant.
Inside, investigators discovered an indoor marijuana grow operation equipped with grow lights, irrigation systems, ventilation systems, and fertilizers. They seized about 20 dried marijuana plants, nearly 170 pounds of processed marijuana, and more than half a pound of marijuana byproduct, along with additional evidence related to distribution.
While the grow operation was licensed and authorized under the USDA hemp program and North Carolina law, investigators determined that products processed and sold by the business had been altered, rendering them illegal under state law.
Investigators also identified potential electrical and fire hazards stemming from unauthorized modifications inside the building. The Kings Mountain Codes Division responded to address those concerns.
Dustin Ray Spake was charged with trafficking marijuana and maintaining a dwelling, vehicle, or place for controlled substances.
The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be forthcoming, according to the department.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the Kings Mountain Police Department at (704) 734-0444 or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers at (704) 481-8477.
Note: WCNC instituted a policy in March 2021 regarding the broadcast or posting of mugshots.
WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.
