A proposed ballot initiative to legalize medical marijuana in Idaho has surpassed 100,000 signatures, bringing the effort closer to qualifying for the November ballot.
The initiative is backed by the Natural Medicine Alliance of Idaho. Idaho currently bans all forms of cannabis.
Supporters say legal medical cannabis would give some patients an alternative to opioids and anxiety medications.
Earlier this month, the Idaho Senate passed a resolution opposing the initiative on a 62-3 vote, urging Idahoans to vote against the measure. The resolution also criticized medical cannabis legalization on medical, financial, and moral grounds.
To qualify for the November ballot, the group needs 70,725 signatures representing 6% of registered voters. They must also meet signature requirements across 18 of Idaho's 35 legislative districts.
The group must submit signatures to the Idaho Secretary of State's office by April 30th.
