Missouri currently does not conduct research on marijuana plants, but that will likely change in the near future. A proposed rule would allow Missouri to create marijuana research facilities across the state.
Dr. Rieka Yu is Policy Director for the Division of Cannabis Regulation within HSS. She said the proposal would not place limits on the number of entities that can conduct research on cannabis plants.
“It would just be dependent on how many entities want to apply and how many would meet the requirements to get the license,” she told Missourinet.
A wide variety of entities would be eligible to apply.
“We think either universities, private companies, or even existing licensees would be able to get the license and perform research,” Yu said.

Yu also said the licenses would allow for practically any type of research on marijuana.
“With a range from, you know, more agricultural research, looking at what impacts marijuana growth and cultivation,” she said. “(Also, research) with human and animal subjects, looking at what does consumption do to physiological responses or even trying to figure out standard THC dosages — things like that.”
The proposed rule will be published May 1st in the Missouri Register on the Secretary of State’s website, with public comments accepted through May 31st. It’s expected to be finalized sometime this summer.
