MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – An Alabama cannabis access advocacy group is sharing its thoughts on a recent executive order from President Donald Trump.
The order, in part, reclassified marijuana from a Schedule I drug, which are drugs with no accepted medical use, to a Schedule III drug, which are determined to have less potential for abuse than drugs in Schedules I or II.
“It’s kind of a toss-up between ‘this is unsure,’ but ‘this is amazing and we’ll take it.’”
Jennifer Boozer Stewart, communications director of the Alabama Cannabis Coalition, said she is not opposed to the reclassification, but said it should go further in providing access to marijuana as a medical option.
“We want it de-scheduled. We want to have the right to use natural medicine just like we have the right to use vitamin C and bone broth and tallow cream on our faces without the government regulating it out of existence and handing it to giant corporations,” she said.
The executive order also aimed to improve access to hemp-derived CBD products. At the signing ceremony, Dr. Mehmet Oz, Medicaid and Medicare Administrator, said patients could be eligible for coverage on up to $500 of hemp-derived products each year.
“[Many seniors] have been through the wringer with conventional medicine and a lot of them have come up short and they want their quality of life back,” said Boozer Stewart.
However, U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) joined 22 Senate Republican colleagues in voicing concerns about the Trump order. In part, they said that marijuana is a harmful drug that would undermine an economic golden age.
Growing the marijuana industry endangers the health and safety of Americans. The only winners from rescheduling will be bad actors like Communist China and drug traffickers.

Alabama’s other senator, Katie Britt (R-AL), along with 19 other republican senators, did not sign the letter opposing the reclassification.
