HARTFORD, Conn. — On Christmas and New Year’s Day in Connecticut, consumers are unable to purchase alcohol to take home.
Officials with the state Department of Consumer Protection issued a reminder earlier this week informing residents that on both major holidays, alcohol can only be sold for on-site consumption.
On both Dec. 25 and Jan. 1, package stores must remain closed, and grocery stores cannot sell booze.
Manufacturer permits cannot sell alcoholic liquor to go on Christmas or New Year’s Day, and alcohol cannot be served to go with food on either day.
Bars, restaurants and other establishments that sell food are still permitted to serve alcohol on-site, but it cannot be taken to go.

All the while, hours for cannabis licensees are unaffected in Connecticut, and those who choose to wager on holiday sports are free to do so as well.
DCP Commissioner Bryan Cafferelli stole a line from “Elf” in his release on Tuesday.
“A wise elf once said the best way to spread Christmas cheer is by singing loud for all to hear,” he said. “If a festive cocktail helps you do that, make sure you buy your alcohol ahead of time.”
Cafferelli also urged people to act responsibly on both holidays.
“No matter how you choose to spend the holidays, whether it’s a silent night or rocking around the Christmas tree, it is important to know your limit, arrange designated drivers and be respectful of the establishments and communities where you celebrate,” Cafferelli said.
DCP officials say that local zoning rules may create even stricter limits for both off- and on-premise sales on Christmas and New Year’s Day.
