‘Doomed to fail’: Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana shares current concerns in statewide tour – KOLN | Nebraska Local News, Weather, Sports | Lincoln, NE
LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana has finished its latest statewide tour, hosting a series of town halls with the goal of explaining the current state of medical marijuana in Nebraska.
On Monday, the group made its final stop here in Lincoln, where executive director Crista Eggers detailed many of the challenges the group has faced over the years in getting medical marijuana to the people who need it, including court cases, battles in the Legislature, and now the controversial medical marijuana commission.
Despite medical marijuana being legalized in 2024, Eggers says the rollout of the drug hasn’t been easy, and she’s spent these town halls hearing from Nebraskans who still don’t have access.
“The biggest concern from patients, from caregivers, from law enforcement from medical practitioners, from the industry themselves, is that the commission has set up a program that is doomed to fail,” she said.
Eggers also said that many of Nebraska’s leaders are still opposing the drug, even though more than 70% of Nebraskans voted to legalize it.
“This should not be on us to continue advocating, to continue defending the voice of the people,” she said. “The people spoke. Lawmakers and our governor and our attorney general and our U.S. state senators – they are not doing their job. People elected them to be there to represent the will of the people, and that is not what people think they’re getting.”

Critics of medical marijuana, including some Nebraska state senators, have argued that the current Medical Marijuana Commission and its regulations are what Nebraskans voted for.
But Eggers disagrees and is encouraging state leaders to talk with voters about what they actually wanted.
“People understood what they voted for, very very clearly. That is what I’ve heard time and time again,” Eggers said. “Every single senator in Lincoln, their constituents supported this. And so it should be very easy for them to go back to their constituents and have the same conversations we have.”
Making notable appearances on Monday were former state senator Patty Pansing Brooks along with current U.S. Senate candidate Dan Osborn, who both showed their support for access to medical marijuana.
“People from both sides understand that this is beneficial to patients,” he said. “And if they don’t understand that then they haven’t been educated yet. So I feel like it’s going to be my job to go around the state and talk about this and hopefully educate some people on it.”
Eggers says going forward, Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana is going to continue advocating wherever it can and keep hosting more town halls.
