Legal recreational marijuana was sold for the first time in Redmond just before Christmas.
Oregrown, at 2127 S. Highway 97, opened its doors Dec. 23 after what co-founder Hunter Neubauer said was a 10-year wait.
The city of Redmond approved its first two dispensaries earlier this year and capped the number of dispensaries that can operate in the city at one for every 10,000 residents. With around 37,000 residents, one more dispensary will be allowed to operate in the city.
Neubauer said the cannabis dispensary had been working with the city of Bend and the city of Redmond and their residents for close to 10 years to advocate for dispensaries in Redmond.
In November 2024, more than half of Redmond voters approved allowing dispensaries in the city, and about 70 percent of voters were in favor of instituting a local sales tax on those dispensaries.
Once Redmond got on board, Neubauer said the application process was competitive. About 12 dispensaries from across the state vied for two spots.
“It was a well-known opportunity,” Neubauer said. “It being limited — that’s really what gets people excited.”
The Flower Room, with shops in downtown Bend and Tumalo and an indoor, organic production facility in Tumalo, was the other dispensary awarded approval.
Owner Alex Eakin said the dispensary is awaiting permit approval to start building its storefront at 2245 NW Fourth St. The goal is to be open in the spring, he said.
Oregrown, which was founded in Bend in 2013, also opened a shop in Eugene in October. It has four dispensaries across Oregon and one in Chico, California.
Neubauer said Oregrown had been keeping a tab on its Bend store patrons to get an idea of how many customers it may lose in Bend by opening a shop in Redmond.
“It’s quite a few,” he said. “There’s a lot of people who travel from Redmond to Bend for work every day or just to go buy cannabis.”
Oregrown brought on 20 new staff members to run the shop. Staff were trained at the Bend store to get real-life experience before the new shop opened, Neubauer said.
Since opening, he said business has been good. “Seems like the town is pretty excited about it.”
Oregrown will have a grand opening this weekend, Jan. 3-4, with discounts, giveaways and raffle prizes. The shop is open 8 a.m.-8 p.m. daily.
