Florida residents share mixed views on potential recreational marijuana legalization – Gulf Coast News and Weather

Florida residents are expressing mixed feelings about the potential legalization of recreational marijuana, which remains illegal despite the state’s approval of medical marijuana in 2014.
Mary Maher from North Fort Myers said, “I have mixed feelings about it. I do believe that marijuana, there’s no problem with people smoking it or using it, but I don’t want the government to have its nose in it.”
Residents in Southwest Florida have shown support for the legalization of recreational marijuana. Pat Gonyea from North Fort Myers said, “Smoke it if you like it.”
Supporters have until Feb. 1 to submit more than 800,000 valid signatures to the state Division of Elections to get the choice on the ballot. A similar proposal fell short of receiving the required 60% voter approval in 2024 after Gov. Ron DeSantis helped lead efforts to defeat it.
Cliff Carey from Cape Coral commented on the voting threshold, saying, “Yeah, I think that’s, that’s correct. I think it should be 60-40. It should be more people wanting it than not wanting it.”
Opponents of recreational marijuana in the state have argued that it can impair driving and workplace safety. However, some residents believe it is a better alternative. Madison Phillips from Cape Coral said, “We have so many people to do. So many like illegal things and like, on, like, alcohol and but, like, you know, what’s the worst thing you do on your high? You eat too much. What’s the worst thing you do when you’re drunk? You might get a DUI or kill somebody.”
If recreational marijuana is approved in Florida, individuals 21 and older will be able to purchase it. This year’s general election in Florida is set for Nov. 3, 2026.
