INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (KCTV) – City leaders take additional steps to regulate marijuana consumption in Independence.
While recreational marijuana use is legal in the state the Missouri Constitution allows cities and counties to regulate when it can be consumed in public.
Independence leaders updated laws when Missouri legalized marijuana in 2022. Now they are considering making it illegal to consume marijuana for recreational purposes in any public space.
Council members tentatively approved adding the following subsection to the city’s code during a meeting on January 5:
The first reading passed by a vote of 7-0.
Council members are expected to bring up the issue for a second reading at a future meeting.
