KBI offers clarity to executive order reclassifying marijuana, dispensary operators say move is step in right direction – KWCH
WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – President Trump signed an executive order this week that reclassified marijuana from a Schedule I drug to Schedule III. It’s a move that the administration said will make it easier for medical research to be conducted on the drug. However, the reclassification does not make marijuana legal.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation released a statement saying that growing, distributing or possessing marijuana remains illegal under state and federal law.
The announcement comes amid recent lawsuits filed against the KBI by local distributors trying to recover products they say are legal.
While marijuana remains illegal in Kansas, even for medical use, some dispensary operators said the move is a step in the right direction.
“Even if you are a small player in the hemp industry, which we all are, this is good because testing is gonna come up to this, clinical trials for this plan, and I think everybody wants to see that,” said Brett Harris, an industry representative and owner of KannaBliss.
A bill was introduced last year in the Kansas Senate to legalize medical marijuana, but it did not advance.
