AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – A Georgia State Patrol (GSP) trooper seized about 50 pounds of marijuana following a traffic stop and pursuit Monday night along Interstate 20, authorities said.
The stop occurred around 9:15 p.m. in Taliaferro County when a trooper in Washington County pulled over a black Mazda SUV traveling eastbound near mile marker 150 for a traffic violation.
While speaking with the driver, the trooper observed marijuana in “plain view” inside the vehicle, authorities said.
The trooper learned the driver did not have a driver’s license on his person and informed him that a search of the vehicle would be conducted.
The driver then fled, prompting a pursuit that continued into Warren County, according to GSP.
Near mile marker 155, the trooper prepared to perform a PIT maneuver when the driver suddenly braked, causing the patrol vehicle to strike the Mazda, according to officials.
The suspect then pulled onto the shoulder and stopped, authorities said.
The trooper held both the driver and a passenger at gunpoint until backup arrived. A felony traffic stop was conducted, and both occupants were taken into custody, GSP said.
A search of the vehicle uncovered a large trash bag and a duffel bag containing about 50 pounds of marijuana, authorities said. The passenger was later released at the scene.
The driver was charged with operating a vehicle without headlights, no driver’s license on his person, speeding, felony fleeing and attempting to elude, reckless driving, DUI, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and felony possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.
The seized marijuana was turned over to the Taliaferro County Sheriff’s Office.
