A new cannabis dispensary business will be opening up in the near future. Diamond Mayor Terry Kernc said the business is located on East Division Street.
“Quite a while. Twenty twenty five, the village board. I actually reached out to the, company that’s doing this. Reason being motor fuel tax has dropped. Street maintenance in order to keep the streets in Diamond in, good shape. We’ve been spending about three hundred thousand, two hundred fifty, three hundred thousand a year to keep things in good shape and to go through town. The motor fuel tax is only bringing in about eighty thousand dollars a year with the electric vehicles coming online. I think that amount will probably drop, and the state has not, taken the time to figure out how to somehow tax electric vehicles so that there’s still motor fuel tax of some sort to cover, you know, street maintenance. So long story short, a recreational, cannabis shop brings in approximately three hundred thousand dollars a year. So I, discussed it with my board, got the company that’s doing this to, you know, do it actually here in Diamond.”
Kernc stated the money from business will be used for street maintenance.
“All of the revenue, the sales tax revenue from that business will be earmarked strictly for street maintenance. So that’s reasoning behind it. We’re very happy to have them. we anticipate them pulling, motorist off I fifty five because they will have highway signs advertising their store having them come into town and purchase recreational marijuana and the store itself. I’ve toured it. They’re very, very secure. They’ll have a security guard anytime that the store is open. They are thoroughly secure inside the building. I’m very impressed with the way the building operates. all the cameras that the state has access to twenty four seven. Just a very, very secure building, well run. And the folks coming off the highway will purchase their recreational marijuana, hopefully fill up at the gas station, hopefully go through, one of the drive fields in town, and maybe even stop at the Jewel and buy some food, and then hop back down the highway and go on their merry ways.”
The Diamond Village Board in September of 2025 passed an ordinance granting a special use petition.
