Saginaw teens charged with trying to kill another teen in marijuana sale – MLive.com
SAGINAW, MI — Two Saginaw teens are charged with luring a third teen from his home to buy marijuana from him, only to repeatedly shoot him and leave him for dead.
One of the teen suspects is now jailed, while his alleged cohort remains at large.
Deandre D. Morris, 18, on Tuesday, Dec. 23, appeared before Saginaw County District Judge M. Randall Jurrens for arraignment on single counts of assault with intent to murder and felony firearm. The former is a life offense, while a conviction of the latter mandates a minimum two-year prison term consecutive to any related stint.
Morris’ 17-year-old codefendant faces the same two charges but is not in custody as of Dec. 26. He is charged as an adult but MLive is not divulging his name until he has been arraigned.
The duo’s charges stem from an incident that occurred the night of May 16 in the 2400 block of Hiland Street on Saginaw’s East Side.
Prosecutors allege Morris and his codefendant agreed to buy pot from another 17-year-old male. The seller drove to the agreed-upon meeting site and saw Morris and the other man emerge from around the side of a duplex, clad in black with hoods obscuring their faces, prosecutors allege.
The duo’s appearance gave the seller second thoughts and he kept driving, prosecutors allege. Morris’ codefendant contacted the seller and cajoled him into returning, assuring him everything was OK, prosecutors allege.
When the seller returned, Morris and his friend approached the vehicle’s driver’s side window. Morris’ friend handed the seller a cellphone to verify his CashApp information for the marijuana sale, prosecutors allege.
Morris then pulled a pistol and repeatedly shot the seller, prosecutors allege. The seller still had his vehicle in drive and immediately accelerated but crashed a short distance ahead, prosecutors allege.
The alleged assailants fled. Emergency responders took the wounded teen to an area hospital. He suffered gunshot wounds to his mandible or jaw, sternum, and left forearm, prosecutors said.
Investigators searched the victim’s vehicle and recovered Morris’ CashApp card and a cellphone containing Morris’ Apple ID and iCloud information, prosecutors allege. The recovered phone also featured Morris’ codefendant’s social media account through which he communicated with the victim, prosecutors allege.
The victim positively identified Morris as his shooter to police, prosecutors added.
Morris has no criminal record, though prosecutors wrote in a bond recommendation that his “dangerous and violent behavior in this case cannot be understated.” They went on to described him as a flight risk and asked for a bond of at least $250,000.
Judge Jurrens on Tuesday ordered Morris held without bond and scheduled his case for a preliminary examination on Jan. 13.
