RICHMOND, Va. (WDBJ) – Lawmakers will bring all types of proposals to Richmond for the 2026 Legislative Session and one proposal expected to make its way through the General Assembly would focus on the future of marijuana.
Right now, it is legal for people 21 and older to have marijuana, but currently there is no legal way to buy it unless you qualify for medical use.
Earlier this year, a proposal to create a legal retail marketplace made it through both the House and Senate but got a veto from Governor Glenn Youngkin.
Incoming Governor Abigail Spanberger will now hold that veto power, so in a recent one-on-one interview, WDBJ7 asked her about the future of cannabis in the Commonwealth.
She emphasized the importance of regulation, proper labeling, and finding the right way to use the revenue.
“I think it’s important a consumer should always know what they are buying. And so that means strong labeling, that means understanding the strength,” Governor-elect Spanberger said.
“It is incredibly important to me that that new revenue stream, in addition to going towards regulation, be invested in education.”
The General Assembly session starts January 14.
