An Ocala man was arrested for lying about his name to avoid being charged for driving with a suspended license and marijuana.
A deputy saw 33-year-old Larry Tiray Williams driving a blue Lexus north on U.S. 301 near County Road 466 in Oxford around 9:10 p.m. Thursday, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. A check of the license plate revealed it was registered to a white 2010 Mazda sport utility vehicle, leading to a stop near the intersection.
When asked for his license, Williams stated he did not have it on him and gave a false name and date of birth. This information had no exact match with law enforcement databases, so he was asked to write it down. He still gave the same answer, the report said.
Williams was then asked if he had any drugs in the vehicle, which he denied. He claimed to have a medical marijuana card, but it actually expired in 2021. Due to this and the smell of marijuana coming from his vehicle, he was asked to step out so it could be searched, the report said.
He subsequently admitted to giving a false name and told the deputy his real one. He stated he did this because he did not have a driver’s license. A check of his license later revealed he had 14 active sanctions, the three most notable being for controlled substances in Marion County from June 2017 and June 2018, the report said.
The deputy continued with the search and found two black ashtrays with burnt hand-rolled marijuana cigarettes in the back seat. In a small compartment below the dash was another burnt cigarette, the report said.
Williams was ultimately arrested on charges of possession of marijuana (less than 20 grams), false ID given to law enforcement officer and driving while license suspended. He was transported to the Sumter County Detention Center where he is being held without bond, due to Marion County putting. a hold on his custody.
