BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Two people were arrested on Tuesday after a multi-agency investigation revealed that they were allegedly selling illegal fireworks and drugs in northeast Bakersfield.
On Jun 9, 2026, Frankee Appodaca, 21, and Thista Lopez, 26, were found to be allegedly operating an illegal marijuana dispensary in the 2100 block of River Boulevard after the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Task Force initiated an investigation following residents' complaints of illegal sales of fireworks.
BPD’s Violent Crime Apprehension Team (VCAT) assisted in the operation, allowing investigators to serve a search warrant, which resulted in the seizure of illegal aerial fireworks and narcotics.
The following was seized:
BPD narcotics detectives, Bakersfield Fire Department arson investigators, DEA special agents, and CHP officers collaborated in the investigation.
Appodaca and Lopez's cases have been submitted to the Kern County District Attorney's Office for review.
The Bakersfield Fire Department said that, through ongoing enforcement operations and coordinated investigations, about 7,000 pounds of illegal fireworks have been seized to date.
Bakersfield police remind residents that with the approaching July 4 holiday, they are asked to contact the department if they suspect or are aware of illegal fireworks being sold or used in their neighborhood.
Do not call 9-1-1 to report illegal fireworks. Residents are asked to report illegal fireworks activity through the Bakersfield Fire Department's online reporting system HERE.
Only call 9-1-1 if there is an immediate threat to life or property, police said.
