HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – Soon, the first medical cannabis shops in Alabama will open.
Next week, employees of those shops will undergo mandatory state training.
While the employees learn, advocates said it’s actually the public who needs more information.
Alabama Cannabis Coalition founder H. Marty Schelper said her group is getting questions every day from potential patients who feel lost.
She said the state needs to let people know how medical cannabis will work in Alabama.
“It doesn’t matter if growers have been licensed. It doesn’t matter if processors have been licensed. It doesn’t matter if dispensaries have been opened,” Schelper said.
“If the citizens of the state of Alabama want to access this program, and if they have not been educated on how to participate in this program, the progress fails.”
This is not legalized marijuana, and people purchasing the medical cannabis will need a doctor’s referral.
Only certain items, such as suppositories, gels, and pills, will be sold.
Edibles and anything you can smoke will not be available in these cannabis shops.
Doctors have strict limits on which conditions can be treated with these items.
