TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) — You can now get recreational marijuana delivered here in Arizona. Before this new rule went into effect, only medical marijuana patients were eligible for home delivery.
Starting November 1st, you don’t need to make a trip to a dispensary to get marijuana products. Recreational delivery is now approved along with medical.
“The customers now have another avenue in which they can access these products. Maybe something more convenient,” said Michael O’Brien.
Arizona dispensary owner and AZ Dispensary Association board member Michael O’Brien says this change not only adds ease for the customer, but he also expects it to have a positive impact on our economy.
“We’re utilizing the same third-party service that has been doing our medical delivery, but now they get more drivers, and they need more infrastructure and all that kind of stuff so there’s definitely some job creation there,” said O’Brien.
O’Brien also says it adds the potential for new customers.
“There are probably some people that are still uncomfortable coming into a dispensary because maybe they are intimidated or they’re unfamiliar or maybe they just don’t want to be seen there because they have their own stigmas within their communities,” said O’Brien. “So that may open up some additional customer opportunities as well.”
However, ordering through a screen creates concern for one Tucson mother News 4 Tucson spoke with. She says as a parent of a high schooler, she’s nervous about this sort of expanded access to marijuana.
“How do you tell the true age and the true identity of the people ordering it? These children are outwitting the system and the parents. They’ll steal uncle joe’s id, order it, have it come to the house, incept the package, and nobody knows the difference,” said the mother.
The same rules apply to buying marijuana in store. You need to be 21 or older – so, in order to get it delivered, you need to provide an ID to order online. And when the delivery is made, the ID will be checked again to verify the age, address and person accepting the order.
This change is being made by the Arizona Department Health Services. It is officially in effect now. However, keep in mind that not all dispensaries are starting recreational delivery immediately.
