WATCH: Memphis youth mentor and his rising rap star son busted in alleged marijuana trafficking case
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A well-known Memphis youth mentor and his son — an emerging rap artist — are both facing serious felony charges after deputies say they were tied to nearly 25 pounds of marijuana shipped through the mail.
Sam Davis, founder of the long-running Memphis Kings youth basketball program, and his son Trey Davis — known in the music world as Fresco Trey — were arrested as part of the same investigation. Both are now out on bond.
According to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, the case began with two suspicious packages flagged at a distribution center on Carrier Street. Deputies say the boxes, shipped from the same address in Arkansas, raised red flags before they ever reached their destinations. Neither box was addressed to either Davis.
Narcotics investigators brought in drug-sniffing dogs, which alerted to both packages. Field tests later confirmed the presence of marijuana, according to court records.
Detectives then tracked the deliveries.
Investigators say Trey Davis picked up one of the packages on Brower Street. The second package was delivered to a home on Rutland Road. Deputies say they followed Trey Davis from that location to a home on Farrow Road — where both he and his father were taken into custody.
According to court documents, the package was found sitting on the kitchen table at the time of the arrests.
Authorities say the investigation did not stop there. Inside the home, deputies reported finding additional marijuana, along with firearms. Court records state Sam Davis denied the packages were his, but admitted to having more than 400 grams of marijuana in a bedroom closet. Davis also denied ownership of the weapons according to the affidavit.
The arrests have stunned some in the community, especially given Sam Davis’ decades of work mentoring young people through his basketball program.
“He can still help the kids,” said Orange Mound resident Renoir Banks. “I don’t think it takes away from the work he’s done.”
Another resident, Landon Banks, shared a more mixed reaction, saying he didn’t necessarily see an issue unless the drugs were harming others, while still acknowledging the seriousness of the case. “As long as he wasn’t given it to no kids, he wasn’t doing like, probably trying to sell it, to the kids, you know, distribute it out over the world, cause harm, I really don’t see nothing wrong with it,” Banks said.
Trey Davis, meanwhile, has been building momentum in the music industry. Performing under the name Fresco Trey, he has gained attention online, with at least one of his music videos surpassing 1 million views. He is also reportedly preparing to go on tour next month.
Both men now face multiple felony charges in connection to the case. Sam Davis was released on a $30,000 bond, while Trey Davis was released on a $5,000 bond.
FOX13 reached out to both Sam Davis and Memphis Kings for comment but has not received a response.
