Shapiro pushes for legalizing recreational marijuana on 4/20
Governor Josh Shapiro used the occasion of April 20 to renew his call for the Pennsylvania legislature to legalize recreational marijuana. Speaking on the unofficial holiday, the governor pointed out that Pennsylvania is now an island among legalized neighbors, with New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Maryland, and Delaware all allowing adult-use sales. Shapiro emphasized that this geographic disadvantage is costing the Commonwealth hundreds of millions of dollars in potential tax revenue as residents travel across state lines to make purchases. His 2026 budget proposal estimates that a regulated market could eventually generate over $1.3 billion for the state over five years, money he intends to use for schools, public safety, and economic development.
