An Indiana senator is working to bring the topic of medical marijuana back to the statehouse.
State Sen. Mike Bohacek announced Monday that he’s working on a bill for the 2027 legislative session that, if passed, could legalize medical marijuana across the state.
The Republican from Michiana Shores said it comes as state leaders appear to be more open to discussing it.
“In light of the governor’s openness to consider legislation regarding the legalization of marijuana, we need to consider a feasible marijuana policy that would be the most helpful to Hoosiers and the economy,” Bohacek said. “The use of medical marijuana has been proven to be beneficial for some medical disorders and could help people throughout the state who are suffering find some relief.”
Bohacek says the legislation would lay out rules for medical use, create a tax policies for sales and distribution, and establish guidelines for police regarding THC impairment.

“I intend to include plenty of parameters around the implementation and use of medical marijuana to ensure it’s being properly regulated and distributed by Hoosier healthcare professionals,” Bohacek said.
Bohacek said the proposal could also bring in millions of dollars in tax revenue each year, pointing to Indiana’s current sales of delta-8 THC and other similar products.

The proposal is still being drafted and would not be introduced until the 2027 legislative session.
If passed, medical marijuana would become legal across the state, but recreational marijuana would still remain illegal.
Currently, all of the state’s bordering Indiana have at least legalized medical marijuana, including Kentucky.
