CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Two men and two women are facing drug charges after a Laramie County sheriff’s deputy discovered about 5 pounds of suspected marijuana during a multi-vehicle traffic stop on Interstate 80.
The arrested suspects are Sergio Alejandro Mercado, Luis Humberto Recinos, Daniela Recinos and Stephanie Andrea Recinos. Mercado and Luis Recinos were each charged with felony possession of marijuana, conspiracy and sale or delivery of marijuana. Daniela Recinos was also charged with possession of marijuana and conspiracy while Stephanie Recinos was charged with possession of marijuana.
All are presumed innocent until they plead or are found guilty.
According to two case affidavits, the incident happened Feb. 15 when a deputy saw a Nissan pickup truck, a Toyota Camry and a Ford F-650 U-Haul traveling west near mile marker 365 at around 8:22 p.m. The deputy initiated a traffic stop on the Camry because it was following the Nissan too closely and had an inoperable license plate lamp. The Nissan pickup also pulled over onto the shoulder about 100 feet ahead of the Camry.
While speaking with the Camry’s occupants, identified as Stephanie Recinos and Daniela Recinos, the deputy saw dispensary marijuana products in plain sight. He then made contact with the Nissan’s driver, identified as Mercado, and reported smelling the odor of marijuana inside the truck’s cabin. Mercado told the deputy the three vehicles were traveling together from Michigan to Reno, Nevada, to assist with the relocation of Stephanie and her husband.
K-9 Yapp was deployed to the scene and alerted to the presence of narcotics in all three vehicles. Searches of the Nissan and the Camry yielded misdemeanor quantities of suspected marijuana and suspected THC concentrate, with additional suspected THC vape products found near Mercado.
The driver of the U-Haul was identified as Luis Recinos, the father of the two women in the Camry. When deputies opened the rear of the U-Haul, they reported an overwhelming odor of raw plant marijuana. Because the cargo compartment was packed precariously with household goods, law enforcement sealed the vehicle and applied for a search warrant.
The U-Haul was subsequently towed to the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation offices for a full search. Investigators reported finding a black and yellow plastic tote wrapped in a large trash bag hidden among the household items. Inside the tote, they found a large quantity of suspected cannabis flower that tested presumptive positive for THC. The plant weighed about 4.8 pounds on a scale at the DCI sally port and 5.15 pounds when weighed again in separate evidence parcels at the Laramie County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators later confirmed Mercado was the official renter on the U-Haul agreement. Court records also note that Mercado was previously convicted in 2017 for misdemeanor possession of marijuana for sale in California, for which he was granted conviction relief in 2022.
