TOPEKA, Kan. (KAKE) – A pair of bills that would legalize medical and recreational cannabis in the Sunflower State have been introduced in the state legislature.
According to online filings, House Bill 2687 would legalize medical marijuana, and House Bill 2679 would legalize recreational use for adults.
KTKA reports Democrats have been trying for years to legalize pot in the state. The new bills state that tax dollars from marijuana sales would go toward affordable housing, property tax relief, childcare and the state general fund.
Both bills were referred to the Committee on Federal and State Affairs.

At the national level, President Donald Trump signed an executive order in December to expedite the reclassification of marijuana as a less dangerous drug – an effort to increase research on its medical use but not fully legalize it.
Medical marijuana is now allowed by 40 states and Washington, D.C., and many states have also legalized it for recreational use. But U.S. laws have remained stricter, potentially leaving people subject to federal prosecution.
