In less than 60 days, the Texas Legislature will convene for the 89th Session, the only opportunity for lawmakers to consider expanding the state’s medical cannabis program for the next two years. The Texas Compassionate Use Program provides relief to patients living with qualifying medical conditions, including epilepsy, PTSD and cancer by connecting patients with licensed physicians and medical-grade products.
While some Texans are aware of the medical cannabis program, most are still unsure of how to qualify, what products are offered or how to access them. Here’s a detailed guide of everything you need to know about medical cannabis in Texas.

In Texas, recreational marijuana is illegal. However, Texans with qualifying conditions can access medical cannabis under the state’s Compassionate Use Program. There are over 150 qualifying conditions including PTSD, neuropathy, muscle spasms, seizure disorders and autism.

The Texas Compassionate Use Program (CUP), first established in 2015 and regulated by the Department of Public Safety (DPS), allows Texas residents with qualifying conditions to access medical cannabis. Under this program, licensed physicians can prescribe medical cannabis to eligible patients, while medical cannabis companies like Texas Original produce and dispense the medication to patients all over the state.
Matthew, a Marine Corps veteran and former firefighter, says medicine from Texas Original has greatly improved his quality of life. “After serving as a combat veteran and firefighter, my nervous system is often stuck in a fight or flight. Medical cannabis allows me to relax, sleep and be in less pain.”

After a registered physician approves a patient for a medical cannabis, the prescription is added to the Compassionate Use Registry of Texas (CURT). Patients can then access legal medical cannabis from one of three licensed providers, like Texas Original, the state’s longest running medical cannabis dispensary.

Texas Original serves the entire state of Texas from border to border. The dispensary offers 18 pickup locations where patients can receive their medicine. Pickups are available in Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, Longview, Lubbock and more. Plus, home delivery is offered in areas where there are no nearby pickup locations.

Patients can choose from a variety of medical-grade products like gummies, beverages and tinctures. Every batch of each medical-grade product undergoes strict quality and testing measures to ensure safety, consistency and purity.

The Texas Compassionate Use Program is more than a pathway to access, it’s a lifeline for Texans facing challenges from medical conditions like PTSD, MS, neuropathy and cancer. To learn more about how to get medical cannabis in Texas, visit Texas Original’s website.
