INDIANAPOLIS — President Donald Trump’s acting attorney general has signed an order reclassifying state-licensed medical marijuana as a less-dangerous drug.
The move changes medical marijuana from a Schedule I drug to a Schedule III drug. But what does that really mean?
A Schedule I drug is classified as having a high potential for abuse, no currently accepted medical use, and a lack of safety even under medical supervision. For the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Schedule I drugs are the most dangerous.
Schedule I drugs include heroin, LSD, ecstasy and – until this order – marijuana. For context, cocaine and meth are considered Schedule II drugs.
With medical marijuana now being a Schedule III drug, it still falls under restrictions but with less serious company.
Schedule III drugs, substances, or chemicals are defined as drugs with a moderate to low potential for physical and psychological dependence, according to the DEA.  Examples include products containing less than 90 milligrams of codeine per dosage unit (Tylenol with codeine), ketamine, anabolic steroids, and testosterone.
Schedule III drugs require strict registration for handling, specific prescription limits, and secure storage to prevent theft.
You can find a larger list of Schedule III drugs here.
While this new order on medical marijuana does not make it legal in states where it is currently illegal, it does change the view of marijuana on the federal level.
