LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan cannabis industry is continuing to rebound from one of its most dismal months of adult-use marijuana sales in years.
In January 2026, the industry recorded only $222.4 million in adult-use marijuana sales, the lowest amount since February 2023. But ever since then, sales have climbed month over month to $258.17 million in adult-use sales in April 2026.
Some of that increase in April came from a single day of sales, where customers purchased over $20 million of cannabis.
The high sales day came on April 20, or 4/20, a holiday for cannabis users. The total sales for that day totaled $20.4 million, up about 27% from 2025, when the holiday fell on Easter Sunday and only amounted to about $16 million in sales.
The price of an ounce of flower of adult-use marijuana saw its first month-over-month drop since December 2025. According to monthly sales data in April, the price of an ounce of adult-use marijuana flower was $59.05.
The cannabis industry has seemingly stayed stable since a 24% wholesale tax on marijuana took effect at the beginning of the year, but that could change once customers start feeling the tax.
Robin Schneider, executive director of the Michigan Cannabis Industry Association, says the industry is already feeling the effects of the tax, but not its customers.
“We’re not to the point where customers are seeing that wholesale tax yet,” Schneider said. “They’re (the retailers) still largely selling through the product that they purchased prior to the wholesale tax.”
The monthly data used for this article was taken from the Michigan Cannabis Regulatory Agency’s monthly reports. The sales data for April 20 was given by the Michigan Cannabis Industry Association.
