Getting a medical marijuana license in Oklahoma will include a new facet in 2026.
In Oklahoma, adult residents can obtain a medical marijuana license if they provide a signed recommendation form from a physician and proof of residency, among other criteria. But starting Jan. 1, physicians will need to be registered with the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority before they can provide a recommendation to a licensed patient.
Doctors will need to meet certain requirements and complete medical marijuana education to register.
Here’s what to know about the newest medical marijuana laws going into effect.

Senate Bill 1066, which was approved by Gov. Kevin Stitt in May 2025, requires that doctors need to register with OMMA before they can recommend medical marijuana to any patient, beginning Jan. 1. They are also required to take state-approved classes annually to remain on the register.
Now, under state law, a physician is qualified to sign a physician recommendation form only when all the following requirements are met, according to the OMAA:
Existing state law also notes that only licensed Oklahoma allopathic, osteopathic and podiatric physicians may provide a medical marijuana recommendation for a medical marijuana patient.
According to OMMA, Oklahoma residents age 18 and up are eligible for a medical marijuana adult patient license with proof of identity, proof of residency, an acceptable photo and a signed recommendation form from an authorized physician.
Licenses are valid for two years.
