A new poll shows a majority of Utah voters, just barely, favor legal recreational marijuana.
“If an election were held today, 52% of Utah voters would support legalizing marijuana for adult recreational use, compared to 43% who would oppose it, with 5% undecided,” said Noble Predictive Insights, a Phoenix-based survey firm that does Utah political polling.
Noble asked several questions commissioned by the group, "Keep Utah Medical" — which promotes more access to medical cannabis in the state — in an “opt-in panel survey” conducted from April 7-10, with a margin of error of 4%.
“I think it's shocking that a majority in a conservative state like Utah are in favor of it," said Mike Noble, Predictive CEO, who pegged the largest support among people under 40. "It's not a question of if Utah legalizes recreational marijuana, but when."
Perhaps ironically, Keep Utah Medical said it’s not in the pro-legalized recreational camp.
"We think the best outcomes remain in the medical program,” said Alex Iorg, founder of WholesomeCo Pharmacy, which dispenses medical marijuana.
"We'd like to see improved access for medical cannabis patients, especially getting their cards through telemedicine,” he said, adding he wants the state to include “sleep disturbances” as a qualified condition to get medical marijuana.
Despite the poll, a prominent anti-drug voice said if a vote were held now on legalizing recreational marijuana, it would fail.
"Oh, no question," said attorney Walter Plumb, Drug Free Utah. "Absolutely no question," adding it would lose by "ten points."
