OGDENSBURG, New York (WWNY) – Officers at Riverview Correctional Facility seized more than two pounds of marijuana that had been smuggled into the prison hidden inside a microwave shipped through UPS.
It was discovered on March 27 after an employee working in the storeroom called for help when an inmate broke open a box containing a microwave and grabbed a black bag from inside.
According to the New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association, the inmate ran from the storeroom toward a dormitory, ignoring orders to stop. An officer chased him and ordered him to halt, but the inmate kept running. When he reached a locked dormitory door, he turned back toward the officer, ripped open the bag, and threw the contents on the ground.
The officer grabbed the inmate and forced him to the ground. A second officer arrived and helped handcuff him. Once restrained, the inmate stopped resisting and was taken to the infirmary.
Officers recovered 1.3 pounds of marijuana from the ground. The microwave had been shipped from a Walmart Distribution Center.
The inmate, 32, is serving a 10-to-12-year sentence for criminal use of a firearm in the first degree after being convicted in Albany in 2018. He was placed in the special housing unit after being treated.
One officer hurt his hand and shoulder while restraining the inmate, but stayed on duty after treatment. A search dog later found another vacuum-sealed bag containing 1.15 pounds of marijuana in the storeroom.
