A Teton County, Idaho, man has agreed to plead guilty to multiple felony drug charges under a deal that could steer him into treatment court while leaving his ultimate sentence up to a judge.
In January, authorities alleged that Jacob Mitchell, 32, of Victor, Idaho, possessed more than 5 pounds of marijuana, more than 200 grams of psilocybin mushrooms and an unspecified quantity of cocaine, along with scales, empty baggies, cash and suspected transaction ledgers during a search of his residence.
The search was carried out as part of an ongoing narcotics investigation involving the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the Teton County Sheriff’s Office, according to a sheriff’s press release issued in January.
The plea agreement resolves the case without a trial, through Mitchell still faces a potential maximum of 17 years in prison under Idaho law. The agreement will require substance abuse treatment and leaves sentencing to Teton County, Idaho District Judge Steven Boyce, suggesting a range of possible outcomes short of incarceration, including probation.
According to court records, Mitchell was originally charged with four felony counts: trafficking in marijuana, possession with intent to deliver psilocybin, possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to deliver, and possession of cocaine.
Before the plea agreement, Mitchell faced up to 36 years in prison if convicted on all four counts — with the trafficking charge alone carrying a potential 15-year sentence.
Court records show Mitchell has one prior DUI conviction in 2021. Records also indicate prior misdemeanor cases dating back to 2006, including drug possession, DUI and battery.
These are Mitchell’s first felony charges.
Teton County Magistrate Judge Jason Walker set Mitchell’s bond at $100,000 cash or surety in January. A surety bond is a financial guarantee provided by a third party — typically a bail bondsman — to ensure a defendant appears in court.
Mitchell posted the bond.
On April 2, Boyce approved a modification to the bond allowing Mitchell to travel within the judicial district to be present for the birth of his child, according to court records. The district includes Teton, Fremont and Madison counties.
A status hearing is set for May 19.
