NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — The North Charleston Police Department arrested a man early Thursday morning after officers discovered marijuana and components to convert a gun into a machine gun during a traffic stop.
Darius Marcell Doxie Jr., 21, is charged with possession of a machine gun and possession with intent to distribute marijuana.
An officer was operating a speed-measuring device near Rivers Avenue and Melnick Drive just before 12:30 a.m. when he saw a vehicle traveling 64 mph in a 45 mph zone, which led the officer to conduct a traffic stop.
During the stop, they asked the driver, Doxie Jr., to lower the rear passenger-side window, in which a thick cloud of smoke emerged from the vehicle along with a marijuana odor. He was then asked if he had any guns or drugs inside and he responded by saying that he had a gun near him.
Officers detained Doxie Jr. and conducted a probable-cause search of the vehicle, in which they found small amounts of green plant material in the driver’s door compartment and backpack. Inside the backpack, they reportedly found dollar bills, which were also found on the front passenger-side floorboard, two clear plastic bags containing green plant material and a black scale covered in residue.
They recovered marijuana from two bags and the driver’s door compartment that weighed 90.1 grams and produced a presumptive positive field test for THC. Officers also reported locating a loaded gun in the chamber between the driver’s seat and the center console.
They also discovered a small plastic tub containing components for a gun conversion device, which is mostly used to convert a semiautomatic gun into a machine gun.
Doxie Jr. was booked into the Al Cannon Detention Center.
