You can’t get hooked on pot? Experts say that is a dangerous myth. I talked not too long ago about Pennsylvania Democrats, including Governor Shapiro, wanting to get recreational marijuana legalized in their recent budget requests. Governor Wolfe was also trying. It failed again in last year’s budget, and now Governor Shapiro is proposing it again in his just-announced 2027 budget. He has the Democrat votes, but needs a few Republicans to get it done. All the states that have legalized it talked about the windfall of money they would bring in and all the jobs that would be created. They didn’t say much about the downside of legalizing recreational cannabis and who would really pay the price.
Nationwide, emergency room visits of ‘habitual’ marijuana users are rising, including teenagers, with a condition called “scromiting,” ‘a condition of screaming and vomiting.’ The medical name for this is Cannabis Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS). Those who are affected arrive at hospitals with critical dehydration, so severe they need IV fluids and critical care. They may have severe stomach pain and uncontrollable vomiting. ER visits for adolescents aged 13 to 21 with this condition increased 10-fold between 2016 and 2023, after a number of states legalized recreational use of cannabis. CHS is not usually fatal, but its complications can be. The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), in a 2024 article, estimated that as many as 2.75 million people a year are affected by CHS.
